How to use natural homeade sprays instead of insecticides.....

For many years, our vegetables and fruits.......

Which we purchase at the grocery store have been sprayed with chemical insect repellents which are basically harmful to us.  Washing the fruits and veggies helps when you bring them home before eating them, but how much residue is actually left on our food??

Herein are some suggestions you may use in your own gardens, whether they be flower or vegetable.   They all work and prior to this, I had posted another awesome recipe for natural insect repellents for general usage.

Different Pests Occupying Your Garden

Due to the fact it is spring and the food costs are .....

rising, many of us if we are using our God given intelligence are turning to growing our own vegetables and hopefully you will grow organically without purchasing pesticides for spraying your home grown food.

There are many varieties of bugs which will attack not only our flower beds, but like to munch on the veggies we grow as well.    Companion planting is the best way to rid yourself of an abundance of these pests, and if you are not sure what to plant next to what to deter the little ‘buggers” from attacking your garden, I am sure there is much info online or maybe I will write another hub on this.

When making your natural sprays from your kitchen, a tried an true spray very effective is water with a little dish soap added.   This will have an antiseptic quality and is useful against plant diseases.    Always add a tiny bit to any spray you make, as it helps the spray adhere to your plant leaves.  Try to remember you are not washing dishes with it though and just add a drop     A drop. Or two.   Your plants don’t need to be squeaky clean.

Garlic has been proven as a medicinal herb for centuries.   It is also ace in ridding your garden of bugs, whether planted next to your “stone” fruits, cucmbers, radishes, spinach,  nuts or tomatoes....It helps destroy diseases in these plants,   But make sure not to plant it around your beans or peas......It is also great to plant around your roses to deter the red spiders, which come out in the warm weather......

To make an effective spray from garlic to protect your plants, the oil of garlic emulsion will kill 89% of aphids and 95% of onion flies...

1 garlic bulb

1 quart of water

1 medium onion

1 tablespoon of cayenne pepper

1 tablespoon liquid dish soap

Crush the garlic, mincing it fine. Add finely chopped onion to the mixture, while adding the rest of the ingredients except the soap. Wait an hour before adding the soap to the mixture. The spicy ingredients must sort of stew or steep, almost like tea. After an hour, add the soap and your non-toxic spray is ready to use! This can be stored in the fridge for a week.

For Cutworms and Slugs try this:

Garlic spray is great for getting rid of cutworms, wireworms, whiteflies, and slugs too.

What you need:

1 pint of water

1/4 cup of dish liquid

2 teaspoons of paraffin

6 tablespoons of chopped garlic

Soak the whole garlic in the liquid paraffin for at least 24 hours. After a day, add the dish liquid and water to the mixture. Remember to shake it very well. Strain the solution and store it in a glass jar and this won’t keep for longer than a week so try to use it up.....

For caterpillars and all those yukky worms....you many not smoke, but you can buy a small pouch of tobacco (tops or bugler)      And use one cup of tobacco to one gallon of water.   Let it sit for at least 24 hours until it looks like a weak tea mixture      DO NOT USE THIS ON OR NEAR TOMATOES!!!    In fact if you do smoke, you should wash your hands very well before handling your tomato plants ....there is something about the nicotine they just abhor!!

Onion Spray is a non toxic fumigant.   And the chemicals in asparagus juice will kill the nematodes which form on many of your outdoor and indoor plants.   Airplaine plants are affected by them severely, and transplanting them and cutting off the nematodes helps, but ridding your plant of them is much more effective.

Insect repellents can be made from the crushed leaves, infusions, and oils of citronella, penny royal, cedear wood, eucalyptus, clove, rose geranium, sassafras, cassia anise, bay laurel, and pine tar.....

YOU CAN GROW TICK REPELLENT PLANTS!!!

Lavender, ginkgo, elder .......

There is a wealth of things you can do to avoid putting more chemicals in your body.  Especially if you are growing your own to cut down food cost.

To Your Good Health, and God Bless!!!!!

Thanks for the recipes. It just makes so much sense to use these deterrents. Why poison the whole environment including the foods we will eat.

Good information!

Thank you BK for your comment. Most people do not realize how many chemicals they are ingesting when buying fruits and vegetables at the stores. And the price of organically grown (which are by far the best to eat) is astronomical.

Vegetables can be grown in containers as well, and potatoes planted inside a large tire....mmmmm all of us have old tires around somewhere, don't we?? Have a wonderful day!

You are very welcome drpastorcarlotta....I wish more people would understand the health risks they are running using store bought pesticides, when it is relatively easy to make your own!! Have a blessed day!

I am so glad to have found this Hub. It is true that we tend to poison our world and ourselves with those commercial sprays and these homemade ones are so easy to make it seems crazy not to use them. I have long used garlic in my garden to plant with other plants. They are also very helpful to lemon trees. I once grew the most amazing strawberries with garlic between the plants. The biggest and tastiest strawberies ever!

Love and peace

Great page. I will try some of these safe sprays. Around my neck of the woods we are plauged with wasps everywhere....under our carport, around the water hose, and if you don't use your grill for a few days, they will even camp out there. Then there's the meanies that fly at you when you want to get in your own splashy pool,or open your mailbox. Darn critters. WE mix 4 T of Ajax dishwasing liquid with a pint of water, pour it in a spray bottle, and away we go. For safety, I always wait 'til dark-thirty to spray.

bayoulady; Thanks for your comment..it is that time of year...one thing, spraying at night may allow leaves to develop mold as the warmth of the sun is not available to dry them off. It is better to spray early in the morning before the sun is hot in the sky for best results. Hope this helps. Have a blessed day!! (as for safety, the sprays I make will not harm your animals nor children.)
